Quite a Week

Last week was quite a week. Most importantly, the U.S. Senate acquitted President Trump of the charges brought against him in the Articles of Impeachment passed by House Democrats late last year.

It’s the long-overdue end of a partisan, politically-driven process that has debilitated Congress since it was launched months ago. All this process has done is divide the country that much more. It’s my hope that the Democrats will let this go so that Congress can move on once and for all. But don’t count on it.

Congress and the nation also heard from President Trump himself on Tuesday night as he delivered his third State of the Union Address. It was a tour de force for the President, who highlighted the amazing gains our economy has made the last three years, spoke clearly about the need to protect life, and reiterated his call to secure our borders and crack down on sanctuary cities among many other notable things he spoke about.

The speech was full of emotional and inspiring moments, particularly the reunion of a serviceman with his wife and son after a tour of duty overseas, the honoring of one of the last remaining Tuskegee Airmen, and the awarding of the Presidential Medal of Freedom to conservative radio icon Rush Limbaugh. That honor was even more poignant because Rush has been, sadly, diagnosed with an advanced form of lung cancer.

Unfortunately, a speech optimistic about the future of the nation was marred by disrespect from Speaker Nancy Pelosi. She chose, after the speech was done, to rip up the copy of the speech provided to her by the President as a courtesy. It was a petty, spiteful act of disrespect — the worst I have ever seen in Congress. Had I not witnessed it, I am not sure I would believe it. That is how shocked I was. A number of us sponsored and voted for a measure on the House floor that censuring her for her actions. Predictably, it was voted down by the Democrats.

All the while, the Democrats have been in disarray while days later, we still don’t know the results of the Iowa Democrat Caucuses. If this is how they run their elections, you can be even further assured you don’t want them to run your healthcare! This is why elections matter. And you can know for sure that they will be on another impeachment rampage if the keep the House majority in November.

Back home, I had the opportunity to join the Harnett County Board of Commissioners for their meeting on Monday. Because of changes to North Carolina’s congressional districts following a lawsuit last year, eastern Harnett County as well as all of Bladen and Johnston counties are now in the 7th Congressional District starting January 3, 2021. This means, of course, that I will be on the ballot in these areas this election cycle. I am grateful to have all of Bladen and Johnston counties back in the district and very excited to have the addition of eastern Harnett County.

Thank you for taking the time to read this update. I look forward to keeping in touch with you regularly as we move into the 2020 campaign season. And as always, if we can do anything to be helpful please feel free to let me know.
